Fighting Oppression through Poetry

There are so many types of people in this beautiful country we live in. I hope that all of you reading this have joined me in 2016 and  wish for equality. Even though things are better than they were a hundred years ago, there is far to go. These poets have written poems that speak out against the oppression that comes with being black, being a woman, and being homosexual. These poems were written from a place of obvious fear and passion for the things that these individuals have faced in their lives. I will not pretend I have had it hard. I am a straight, white female. Although many of these things discussed in these poems don’t apply to me, I choose to be aware. Viewing these poems may change someone’s perspectives. Poets like this are striving to help the girls feel comfortable walking alone. These poets are trying to make sure that people know it is okay to love whoever it is you love. These poets want to eliminate the need for things like the hashtag #blacklivesmatter, because things like that should be implied.  Tell me what you think about these poems? Did any one of them stick out to you? Can you relate to these poets? Have you written a poem similar to these? Share it with us!
