I think we can all recognize poetry when we see it. Poetry, in my definition, is telling a story through rhythmic words. Poetry, like anything else, has a starting point. I have attached an article that explains in technical terms what exactly poetry is. This article also gives you some insight into the initial purpose of poetry. Everything has a past and I feel like that is part of the reason poetry is so important. No one ever dismisses the Civil War. No one says we don’t need to study the voyage to America. These are all historical events that are deemed necessary for us to know. I feel poetry should be one of those things that people are expected to know. Poetry is important and historic. Poetry should be something we are fluent in.
